Fall Writing Frenzy 2021
Oct 2, 2021
Co-hosted by Kaitlyn Sanchez and Lydia Lukidis, the #FallWritingFrenzy is a writing challenge: Take a Fall-related image (above) and weave together a KidLit short story. (More information on the challenge here.) Thank you, Kaitlyn & Lydia and guest judge Ameerah Holliday!
Here's my 200-word #OwnVoices story about a boy, a mom, and Chinese shrimp noodles?
*************
HA-LO-MEIN... SHRIMP NOODLE?
by Tony Tong
"Why?" Mommy asks.
"Because, it's Halloween!" I say.
"Ha-lo-mein?" *
I can’t believe Mommy doesn’t know about Halloween!
"No, not ‘SHRIMP NOODLE’... HAL-LO-WEEN! It's trick-or-treat. You knock and they give you candy."
"Why?"
Are you kidding me?
"Because... candy! I just wanna go, ok?"
"Ok, ok, I make costume."
NO NO NO!
"Jason’s brother has a skeleton costume I borrowed."
"Bone? Too scary. I make you costume. Maybe... bunny? Or... lo-mein noodle. I have the yarn."
SERIOUSLY?
"No, Mommy! I’m gonna be a skeleton. Jason's mom said I can go with them."
"You... don't want me to go?"
"I mean... you can, but you worked all day. Maybe you want to rest at home."
"Ok, I stay. I tired."
Finally!
"But turn off the lights. If you don’t, kids will knock on the door."
"Why?"
OH, COME ON!
"Because it's Halloween! If you don't turn off the lights, they'll keep coming for candy."
"How much they pay?"
WHAT!?
"Nothing! They don't pay anything. You have to give them candy for free. That's why you turn off the lights!"
"Ok, ok, I got it.”
Whew.
“Thanks, Mommy.”
“Then... I eat... this... WHOLE BAG OF SNICKERS... all myself?”
“MOMMY!”
“HA! I trick you!”
